The Song of Songs and the Medieval Soundscape

Kris Trujillo is an Adams House Resident Tutor and Ph.D. Candidate at the University of California, Berkeley in the Department of Rhetoric with designated emphases in critical theory and women, gender, and sexuality. Specializing in the history of Christianity, aesthetics, and queer and feminist theory, his research is interested in the cultivation of extraordinary forms of desire. His dissertation project, Silent Desire: Psalms, Songs, and the Sound of Contemplation, argues against a characterization of the "contemplative life" as an absolute disavowal of the physical and embodied world and, instead, examines how the medieval devotional practices of Psalter recitation and of Song of Songs commentary attempt to reorganize erotic love around the mystical desire for God.
